Hailing from the Oneida Nation, the “People of the Standing Stone,” Bruce King was a breakthrough artist who began painting with a radical new style in the early 1970s.  King’s works transcend the boundaries of both European Impressionism and Expressionism.  It has been said that Bruce’s art moves in a unique reality that combines a deeply-rooted feeling for the mystical traditions of the Iroquois-speaking tribes with a brave new sensibility.  Following in the footsteps of Fritz Scholder, Bruce King helped define what is now recognized as the contemporary style of Indigenous American painting; he is considered an icon in the world of Southwestern art.
